I recovered after a bit and reassured him that no, I wasn’t an insurance guy nor a rev’nooer, I was simply a guy who loved trains and took photos of them. He reiterated “You sure you ain’t an insurance guy?” I reassured him again that I was just a foamer…
He has just written a detailed review of the upcoming book “The Call of Trains: Railroad Photographs by Jim Shaughnessy,” due out in November but for which he received an advance review copy.
We wanted to write an introductory post on this blog, sort of a Grand Re-Opening. What we’d like to do is to explain what is going on here, what is planned, and what you can do to see your material published.
Let us explain what we hope to go on here. First, how about a list. The following is what we hope to cover and feature on Main Two:
Railroad News
Feature Articles (In depth news stories and railfan guides, for instance)
And whatever else we can come up with along the way. We’re looking for anything that fits the above description, if you want to contribute, please email us. And if you have a hot news tip, also, email us. This is very much a work in progress at the moment too, and any recommendations or critisms are welcome. How about put it in the comments? Let us hear it!
In today’s edition of Getting the Shot, and in the spirit of the end of the Beijing Olympics on Sunday, we bring you this fantastic photo from Flickr user “Channel Packet” in which he shows us a slag dumping operation in China. Such a neat view, and we gather that there isn’t such a thing as OSHA in the People’s Republic…
We’ve decided to get this blog up and rolling again. There are big ideas in the pipeline, and if you’ve got anything you want to see, or any news tips, send us an email at maintwo(at)gmail.com.
We know it’s late, on a Friday night of all times, but we thought we’d point out this radio show featuring David Plowden. We hesitate to call Plowden a railroad photographer, as he was much more than that, but he has featured quite a few trains in his photos, and he was once an assistant to O. Winston Link. Anyway, please check out this radio interview from Plowden, it’s even in Podcast form.
A daily feature from us at Main Two is “Getting the Shot”, some of the best photography pulled from the Flickr group “Richard Steinheimer: The Art of Trains“. Enjoy.
Today’s photo is from Flickr user “Lampy“, and it’s one which he calls ‘Snoot‘. Appropriate title, there, Lampy, as this is one of the IC&E’s snoot nose SD40-2s.
It’ll be a shame when this railroad folds into the CP Rail empire…
It appears our friend, UP1988, the Katy Heritage SD70ACe, is back on a west coast tour. It’s set to go on a Phoenix, AZ-W. Colton, CA manifest today. Take a peak at that red beast, west coasters.
Also, the CNW8701 went west from Proviso this morning on the Des Moines manifest, and the duo of UP 1995 and CNW8646 are still working out of Belvedere, IL on the auto train.
As always, any tips or sightings, send them to us at maintwo (at) gmail.com. Keep it real.
We’re always looking out for ways in which railroads and music meet. This may be a bit old, but it’s still a favorite. The song is by the Canadian band The Constantines, with video provided by a CSX conductor from Cincinnatti, OH, and it provides a good perspective into the life of a railroad conductor, along with looking and sounding really awesome in the process.

Today’s photo is from Flickr user “wales23us“, one which he calls ‘Waiting to Serve’.
Such a great night shot, and of such a unique operation. Not a whole lot else to do in Mason City at night, though, eh, Lance?
