A daily feature from us at Main Two is “Getting the Shot”, some of the best photography pulled from the Flickr group “Richard Steinheimer: The Art of Trains“. Enjoy.
Today’s photo is from Flickr user “Lampy“, and it’s one which he calls ‘Snoot‘. Appropriate title, there, Lampy, as this is one of the IC&E’s snoot nose SD40-2s.
It’ll be a shame when this railroad folds into the CP Rail empire…

While the DME will probably become history, there’s a good chance the CP will spin of the ICE. It’s redundant to the CP system, but there’s little chance the STB will allow abandonment.
While it would be cool to see someone like KCS eventually get the IC&E portion, it’s doubtful that CP would want to give up access to the big power plants west of the Quad Cities. Surely they want to deliver some PRB coal trains there. Also, they’d want to keep access to the Kansas City gateway for interchange. Although, anything is possible with the STB, we’ll have to wait for the final verdict.
Even still, the CP could probably maintain access to those plants, and to Kansas City by making trackage rights part of any sale. Aside from those considerations, I’m guessing the ICE’s overhead isn’t worth what it would bring in for CP.
